We’ll be honest with you, as we always have been: plenty of rocket packs promise the earth and deliver a damp squib over the neighbour’s shed. The Gemstone Predator isn’t one of them. You get three large display rockets, each carrying its own effect, so the second one doesn’t just repeat what the first one did. Light the blue touch paper, stand well back and enjoy watching everyone else forget they were holding a cup of tea.

Where it fits in your display

The old rule still holds: open with a bang, keep them guessing in the middle, and save something good for the end. The Predator pack covers all three. Fire one to start the show, slip one in between your cakes and barrages, and keep the last one back for the finale. At £89.00 against an RRP of £129.99, that works out under £30 a rocket – which, by our reckoning, is cheaper than a round at most pubs and a good deal more memorable.

Graham’s tip

Rockets go where the stick and the wind tell them to, not where you’d like them to. Use a proper launch tube or rack, pushed firmly into level ground, and angle it a touch away from your audience. Check which way the wind is blowing before you light anything, and make sure the sticks have somewhere sensible to land – the greenhouse has never once asked for one.

Safety information

Category F3 fireworks are for outdoor use only and are sold to persons aged 18 and over. Follow the instructions printed on every rocket, keep spectators at least 25 metres back and never go back to a firework once it has been lit. Please spare a thought for neighbours, pets and livestock – a quick word over the fence beforehand goes a long way.
